Applying for Work? Building Your CV?
"Will those of you who teach at phd granting institutions please tell your graduate students not to put under publications something that they’ve just sent out. If it’s forthcoming—you know it’s going to be published—then I think it’s fine to list it under publications. But stuff just submitted should be in a category called work in progress, or work submitted, or something. No one reading a vita is fooled, only annoyed when something is claimed as a publication that might not ever see the light of day.”
